Shannon Hoverson is New Academic Success Coach at SCPS in Midwest City

Shannon Hoverson has been hired as academic success coach for Southwestern College Professional Studies’ location in Midwest City, Okla.

Shannon Hoverson

Hoverson recently graduated from the University of Central Oklahoma with a bachelor of arts degree in journalism.  This position was intriguing to Hoverson because she has a desire to help others obtain their degree and feel the same sense of accomplishment she did when she received her degree.

“I came to Oklahoma when I was 14 to live with my grandfather while my dad was in the first Gulf War, and after he retired we moved to Oklahoma permanently,” Hoverson says.  “When I was 18, I tried college but it didn’t work for me so I went off to ‘find’ myself. I became a chef in Florida and then went to New York City.  I decided it was time to come home in 2003 and that is when I started back to school.  Six years later I finally received my bachelor’s degree.”

According to Deb Stockman, Professional Studies associate vice president, Hoverson has been both a Navy brat and a non-traditional student, and has an understanding for what Southwestern College Professional Studies learners experience while accomplishing their educational goals.

“I want to help our learners achieve their goals in life, whether that is earning their first college degree or simply gaining knowledge to help them advance in their careers and life,” Hoverson says.
