SC Graduate Emma Wilesden Named Pi Gamma Mu Scholarship Recipient

Emma Wilesden, a 2026 Southwestern College graduate, has been selected to receive the 2026 Effie B. Urquhart Scholarship from Pi Gamma Mu International Honor Society in Social Sciences.

Emma WilesdenAccording to Suzanne Rupp, executive director of Pi Gamma Mu International Honor Society in Social Sciences, the pool of applicants was competitive.

“Pi Gamma Mu scholarships are awarded in support of its mission to encourage and promote excellence in the Social Sciences and to uphold and nurture scholarship, leadership, and service,” Rupp says.

Wilesden, who’s hometown is Hoisington, earned her bachelor of arts degree in psychology and a minor in criminal justice and legal studies.  She graduated summa cum laude (with highest honors) and was Valedictorian.

Wilesden has been accepted into the University of Texas-El Paso PhD program, directly out of her undergrad, which is rare according to Jacob Negley, associate professor of psychology at Southwestern.

“Emma has consistently made Southwestern College proud,” says Negley.  “Her award win is consistent with the hard-working Moundbuilder that I had the pleasure to work with over the last three years. And I am confident that the best has yet to come from Emma.”

Michelle Greenwood, assistant professor of psychology at SC, has also worked with Wilesden and is excited for her future.

“Emma’s achievement of excelling in her studies and earning honors within just three years at Southwestern College is remarkable,” Greenwood says.  “This accomplishment reflects not only her dedication and hard work but also her ability to balance academic rigor with personal growth. I'm very proud of her and believe that this scholarship allows her some additional room for success as she begins her graduate studies.”
