Alex Muñoz Named Director of Career Services at Southwestern College
Southwestern College has announced Alex Muñoz as director of career services. Muñoz will oversee operation of the new Career Center on campus. The center is currently under construction and is set to be open to students August 19, although Muñoz has already begun meeting with students.
Muñoz, who will work closely with students and faculty, comes to Southwestern from the Workforce Centers of South Central Kansas where he worked as a workforce strategy manager.
“I am excited to work with Alex to develop a robust Career Center that expands on the resources and connections faculty offer students,” said Tracy Frederick, senior vice president. “I believe he brings experience in career coaching, job search skills, and a passion for empowering students to achieve their career goals to this new position.”
Lead gifts from two current Southwestern College trustees have funded the addition of the Career Center. David ’73 and Linda Smith, and Scott and Shelley Hecht, both class of 1990, are lead donors. Both David and Scott have served terms as chair of the board.
The Career Center was recognized as a priority during the college’s campus-wide 2016-2017 strategic planning process. It aims to provide a space where students can explore internships and career opportunities, gain valuable skills, and make important connections with employers.
The Career Center is centrally located on campus inside the Harold and Mary Ellen Deets Library and will offer conference room space in addition to a professional space optimized for video and online interviews. The Career Center will be a hub of resources aimed at helping students gain a competitive advantage when applying for jobs and internships.
“I am excited to coordinate a resource for students which will add important value to their experience on campus and to their future,” said Muñoz. “The center will offer a range of services that will have a lasting impact on our students’ lives by preparing and empowering them to enter the job market.”
Muñoz is looking forward to helping students connect with area employers.
“Relationships built between employers in the region and Southwestern College are mutually beneficial,” added Munoz. “Businesses have access to an educated and engaged workforce and students are able to learn through internships and early career opportunity – in a community they know and love.”
“There are so many wonderful people who live and work in Winfield because they attended Southwestern College,” added Muñoz. “That is an important tradition to continue and I’m grateful to have a hand in moving it forward.”
