Frenzy of Activities Kick Off School Year at Southwestern

The 2008-2009 school year is about to begin and Southwestern College has numerous activities planned to celebrate this year’s Fall Frenzy.

“Fall Frenzy introduces new and returning students to all aspects of Southwestern College starting with the carnival and ending with the Moundbuilding Ceremony,” says Sheleah Taylor, director of campus life at Southwestern College.  “New students will have an opportunity to learn how to get involved at SC and a few inside secrets of what it means to be a true Builder.”

Freshmen will move into their residence halls starting on Wednesday, Aug. 20, at 9 a.m.  Following a 3 p.m. Farewell Worship for students and parents, the newly-arrived freshmen will head to Builder Camp at Rock Springs Ranch near Junction City.

Freshmen Work Day will take place on Saturday, Aug. 23.  Since 1992, Southwestern College freshmen, along with Leadership Southwestern students and faculty and staff, have blanketed the city of Winfield on the first Saturday the freshmen arrive.  The goal is to promote feelings of community among incoming students as well as a sense of belonging to the college and the city of Winfield.  Freshmen Work Day also strives to make a difference by establishing new relationships between the college and the community by assisting homeowners with indoor and outdoor home projects that they would otherwise not be able to complete.

Other Fall Frenzy events for the SC students include:

  • Sunday, Aug. 24, there is a welcome back barbeque in the student center from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.; a welcome back worship in Messenger Recital Hall from 7:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.; and Sunday Sundaes from 8:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. in the Java Jinx.
  • Monday, Aug. 25, SC After Dark carnival at the bottom of the 77 Steps from 7 to 11 p.m.
  • Wednesday, Aug. 27, classes begin for students.  A rock painting party is planned from 6 to 8 p.m.
  • Thursday, Aug. 28, the annual Moundbuilding Ceremony takes place at 7 p.m.
  • Friday, Aug. 29, the Matriculation Convocation will be at 11 a.m. in Richardson Auditorium.

Friends of Southwestern College are invited to attend the Moundbuilding Ceremony and the Matriculation Convocation.
