Campus Players, SKS, and SC Singers Collaborate on Christmas Opera
Southwestern College South Kansas Symphony, SC Singers, and Campus Players will present the Christmas opera “Amhal and the Night Visitors,” written by Gian Carlo Menotti.
“Amahl and the Night Visitors” will take place Friday, Dec. 3, at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, Dec. 5, at 3 p.m. in Richardson Auditorium in the Christy Administration Building. Both of these times will begin with a choir and orchestra concert and then after the intermission “Amahl and the Night Visitors” will be performed. Admission is free, but there is an opportunity for donations to cover the cost of production materials rental and royalties.
Songs from “Amahl and the Night Visitors” will be performed during the orchestra concert on Wednesday, Dec. 8, at 7:30 p.m. at the Brown Center at Cowley County Community College. The cost of this concert is $5 for adult and $2 for youth.
“Amahl and the Night Visitors” is the story of a crippled boy and his mother who are desperately poor. Three Kings come to visit Amahl and his mother on their journey to give gifts to glorious child, the baby Jesus.
Campus Players and South Kansas Symphony joined together last year for “Romeo and Juliet,” and now they are teaming up again and adding the SC Singers. “Amahl and the Night Visitors” is musically directed by David Gardner and is staged by Allyson Moon. The South Kansas Symphony is conducted by Daniel Stevens.
Playing the part of Amahl is marine biology sophomore Danielle Morford. Other major roles include: Carol Gardner as Amahl’s mother; Blake Carter as King Kaspar; Cody Davis as King Melchior; Jeremiah Roberts as King Balthazar; and Justin Tinker as the Page.
Erin Buster, Nate Lee, Ashleigh Sizemore, Joe Tran, Stephanie Wheeler, are playing the shepherds and villagers, along with the SC Singers: Julia Faust, Tony Gropper, Elizabeth Hill, Jasmine Jackson, Dylan Moore, Christian Pressley, Will Rosson, Lea Shores, and Anna Stevens.
