SC Theatre to Present ‘The Wolves’

The Southwestern College theatre department will present “The Wolves” on Friday, March 6, and Saturday, March 7, at 7:30 p.m., and Sunday, March 8, at 2 p.m., in Messenger Recital Hall in the Darbeth Fine Arts Building.  There is no admission charge to attend.

The Wolves Poster“The Wolves” is a comedy/drama written by Sarah DeLappe. It centers on the experiences of high school girls through their weekly Saturday morning pre-game soccer warmups. The play received multiple awards and was a finalist for the 2017 Pulitzer Prize for Drama.

The show features an all-female cast.  According to director Allyson Moon, that was intentional.

“The previous production, ‘Man of La Mancha’ was predominantly a male cast so Terry McGonigle (director of theatre at Southwestern College) and I looked at a couple of shows and ultimately landed on ‘The Wolves.’”

According to Moon, the structure of the show is episodic as it takes place in a series of six Saturday’s when they play.  The athletes, who have been playing soccer together for a number of years, share during the show what they care about, how their bodies are changing, and what is going on in the world.  Adult language and adult content is mixed in with the topics that are discussed and the various personalities.

The cast includes: Kalli Viegra, Jessica Talcott, Anika Fairbanks, Lyanna Gholston, Hailey Rosan, Vanessa Lopez, Abbey Denly, Hayley Tarr, and Jaidyn Soldin.  John Moberly is the assistant director and stage manager.

“This production is a celebration of young women and athletes and everything that they face,” Moon says.  “Is my identity just soccer or not? For some it is, for some it isn’t. It is an opportunity for the audience to get to know how dynamic young women really are.”
