Ways to Get Involved

- At Southwestern there is a strong emphasis on service learning. Service Learning is a teaching and learning strategy that integrates meaningful community service with instruction and reflection to enrich learning experiences, teach civic responsibility and strengthen communities.
Here are a few ways you can get involved!
1. Recommend a Freshman Work Day site
- Freshman Work Day is the final day of Southwestern Orientation when all incoming freshmen head out into the Winfield community to work on homes and nonprofit buildings that need repair, painting, cleaning, or yard work. The event creates positive change on an individual and local level.
2. Recommend a high school student for Rotary Leadership Camp
- Rotary Leadership Camp offers an opportunity to discuss the possibilities and responsibilities of being a servant leader, and highlights what Rotary is doing in different communities! Throughout the camp, students will learn about themselves and others, and about motivation and teamwork.
- Camp can be free! Local Rotary clubs provide full and partial scholarships for students who request assistance.
3. Ask your business to serve as a sponsor for a service learning fundraiser
- Proceeds support service work and annual team service trip: http://www.sckans.edu/activities/leadership/fundraisers/
- Some of the fundraisers this year include Garage Sale, Fall and Spring Cleaning, and multiple other fundraisers. Each is in need of supplies and sponsors.
4. Participate in the E-waste collection event
- E-Waste (Electronic Waste) recycling consists of breaking down complex electronic devices into various components and reusing or recycling each material, helping to keep toxic materials out of landfills. Collections will occur annually in October and February.
5. Join in our annual Island Park Clean-up
- The annual Island Park Cleanup consists of SC students and Grace United Methodist Church in collaboration to collect trash in the park and trash polluting the lagoon. You or your group can be a part of this community service event. Clean-up usually takes place in April (near Earth Day).
