Jazz Band and Jazz Combo to Perform Tuesday

The Southwestern College Jazz Band and Jazz Combo will present their spring concert on Tuesday, April 19, at 5 p.m. in Messenger Recital Hall.  Admission is free to the first 100 entrants.

The Jazz Combo will open the show with three tunes: "St. James Infirmary Blues," an American folksong that became an early jazz favorite; "C Jam Blues," by Duke Ellington, and Paul Desmond's "Take Five," made popular by Dave Brubeck. The combo all-stars include Tony Gropper, Nick Hofmeister, Hunter Rockhill, Ian Phillips, Christian Pressley, and Tanner Seidel.

The Jazz Band will perform four original compositions and arrangements: the world premiere of "Vivace in Blue" by Jimmy Leach, and the world premiere of Scott Williams's "El Enmascarado," which will feature an anonymous mystery soloist. Also on the bill will be a Leach head arrangement of Sonny Rollins's "Sonnymoon for Two," and a Leach arrangement of "Bésame Mucho," featuring the Latin fire of guest violinist Tim Miller and the Spanish linguistics of singer Señor Antonio Gropper.
