Chance Alquest Senior Recital April 27
Chance Alquest, a senior at Southwestern College majoring in music with an emphasis in composition and a minor in psychology, will give his senior recital Monday, April 27, at 7:30 p.m. in Messenger Recital Hall in the Darbeth Fine Arts Center. The program will consist of eight of his original works varying in style and instrumentation. Admission is free to the public and a reception will follow.
Also participating in the recital are Joanna Woon, SC sophomore; Melissa Williamson, instructor of music and flute at SC; Allen Dilly, affiliate faculty for clarinet and saxophone, Nick Hofmeister, freshman; and Ismail Farid, affiliate faculty and assistant director of the Southwestern College Youth Symphony. The stage manager for the show is Nathan Haefele.
Alquest moved to Winfield with his family in 1989. He was home schooled by his mother, Debbi Waite, since the first grade and started studying piano at age 10 with the late Judy Johnson. In addition to piano, he has learned to play clarinet, bass clarinet, alto clarinet, alto saxophone, tenor saxophone, soprano saxophone, harpsichord, and organ, and has played with basic percussion.
He graduated with an associate of arts degree from Cowley College in 2007. In addition to studying with the current faculty of Southwestern College he has studied with the Frank Johnson, John Scherling, Michael Wilder, and Steven Butler. He has received a musical scholarship to continue his studies at Southwestern Oklahoma State University Weatherford, Okla. He plans to major in music therapy.
Alquest is a current member of the Winfield City Band and has been for seven years. He was also a member of the Visual Truth Mime Troupe based out of the Hackney Community Baptist Church for four years. He currently plays for church services in the community on both the piano and organ. He received regional recognition playing piano and received top blue for his 4-H club. He has played in the orchestra for three of the musical productions of Southwestern College. At Southwestern College he has been a member of the concert band, South Kansas Symphony, Jazz Combo, and the Regional Jazz Band. He has composed scores for both the video game and movie productions on campus.
