SC to Host High School Choral Festival

Southwestern College will host the fifth annual High School Choral Festival on Monday, Sept. 29.  This one-day music festival is for area high school students and produced by the Southwestern College choral department.  The public is invited to a short culminating concert at 4:30 p.m., in Richardson Auditorium in Christy Administration Building on the Southwestern College campus.  There is no admission charge.

Participating schools include: Winfield High School, Matt Berthot, director; Arkansas City High School, Tim Cassidy, director; Udall High School, Andrea Mendoza, director; Central High School of Burden, Ed Shubert, director; and Wichita Heights High School, Mark Walker, director.

“The festival is a great opportunity for high school students to set aside school rivalries and come together to make glorious music,” says David Gardner, assistant professor of music and director of choirs at Southwestern.  “It also gives these serious music students an opportunity to learn and perform the pieces they’ll be required to sing for the District Honor Choir and the Kansas All-State choir.”

In addition to the massed choir, the SC A Cappella Choir and SC Singers will have their first performances of the school year.

“I’m very excited about the college choirs this year.  We have many outstanding returning students as well as an unusually talented group of freshmen.  I hope the Winfield community will come out to enjoy the sounds of this year’s festival,” Gardner says.
