SCYS Auditions for 2015-16 Coming Up May 19-21
The Southwestern College Youth Symphony (SCYS) will hold auditions for young musicians who wants to be a part of the symphony for the 2015-16 school year. The auditions will be Tuesday-Thursday, May 19-21, from 5 to 9 p.m., in the Darbeth Fine Arts Center on the campus of Southwestern College.
Middle and high school students who play string, wind, brass, or percussion instruments are encouraged to try out. Students should prepare a one- to two-minute solo and a two-octave scale of the musician’s choice. There will also be a sight-reading portion to the audition. Students will be notified of their specific audition day and time upon registration. The audition fee is $5.
The SCYS provides musical training and performance opportunities to talented students in South Central Kansas and Northern Oklahoma. The SCYS strives to maintain a rich heritage of classical music in the region, but will also add a “lite” orchestra ensemble this next season for students interested in alternative styles. Students may participate in both ensembles without additional cost. The SCYS encourages students to achieve musical excellence, function as members of a team, and appreciate the talents of peers in the ensemble. Many musicians make lasting friendships with other members of the orchestra.
Rehearsals for next season are Sundays 2 to 5 p.m. The ensemble fee is $140 for the season, which includes four concerts. Discounts are available for families with two or more musicians in the orchestra.
