What takes more than 12 months of planning,
more than 100 volunteers to staff, and three action-packed days to
experience? It’s Southwestern College’s Homecoming, of
course! We’ve been busy for months, creating the best Homecoming
yet. An outline of the three-day schedule is printed in this Southwesterner,
but it doesn’t include nearly all that is planned. Meanwhile,
mark the dates on your calendar… Oct. 10, 11, 12, 2003, and
be sure to make your motel reservations now – space is limited.
This year’s theme is “Moundbuilders in Paradise,” and
the whole weekend promises to be full of fun and excitement that
you won’t want to miss!
And while we are on a tropical theme, Southwestern
has even more to offer along those lines. SC Alumni Programs has
been hard at work to
create a dream-come-true journey to Hawaii. This outstanding trip will
be offered over the Christmas holiday break, at the same time the SC
men’s basketball team plays at Hawaii Pacific University. Come
for a tropical vacation — the Hawaiian travel experience — and
be a part of the fun at the Builders’ basketball game in Honolulu
as well!
If you have questions or would like more information
on either Homecoming or the Hawaii trip, please contact me at 800-846-1543,
ext. 6334, at
slowe@sckans.edu, or at 100 College St., Winfield, KS 67156-2499. I
look forward to hearing from you!

Moundbuilder Memories
Do you have wonderful memories of your days at good
old SC? If so, we can provide you with a chance to share your tales.
The alumni programs
department is hosting the second annual “Moundbuilder Memories” short
story contest. Whether your reflection is happy, silly, poignant, scholarly,
or even sad, we want to hear how your campus experience enriched your
life and left you with an indelible memory of Southwestern College.
Two
categories are offered: traditional alumni and professional studies
alumni. Contest entries will be accepted through Aug. 31. No late
entries will be allowed.
One overall grand prize winner will be selected
to earn an expense-free Homecoming weekend package*, plus have
your story printed in the
Southwesterner.
In each category, traditional and professional studies,
two winners will be selected: first runner-up and second runner-up.
All winners
will be recognized
at Homecoming
in October, and will have an opportunity to read their composition during
Homecoming weekend.
To enter:
1. Write an original short story about a favorite Southwestern
College memory, 250 words of less. The entry should be
typed or neatly and legible handwritten.
One entry per person, per year, please.
2. Make sure your name, complete address, telephone number, traditional
or professional studies alumni indication, and class year appear prominently
on your entry. Persons
who attended SC but did not graduate are eligible for this contest.
3. Submit your entry in time to be received by Aug. 31 to SC Alumni Programs,
100 College St., Winfield, KS 67156.

KUDOS!
Hats off to all alumni who have sent in names of prospective
new students for Southwestern College. To date we have received more
than 80 names, and we anticipate
more on the way. The SC admissions staff is in contact with these prospects
and we hope you will stay in touch with them too, to encourage them to attend
SC.
Students who enroll at Southwestern will be welcomed
by the alumni department on move-in day, Friday, Aug. 22, with the
Alumni Cookie Break. If a student
you recruited will be a new student, we hope you will come, too, and be
at the Roy
L. Smith snack bar before 3 p.m. for the legacy photo. This photo will feature
multigenerational Moundbuilders, as well as alumni and the students they
recruited.
