1950
Velma Grier '53 recently won two first place awards in
the Senior Olympics of Northern Virginia. She placed first in her
age category in the 50- and 100-meter dash. This is the second year
in a row she has finished first. Velma continues to teach some 40-plus
piano students to use her computer skills to transpose music.
Wendell Piehler '58 and his wife Nancy along with the dean
of the Yale School of Music and 20 others participated in a musical
celebrations tour of Salzburg, Prague, and Vienna October 8-17,
2002. High points were a performance of The Magic Flute in Prague,
The Merry Widow in Vienna, and a tour of the Old/New Synagogue in
Prague built in 1270. The temple once had a survivor torah now in
use at the synagogue in Hamden, Ct., where Wendell is the organist
and choir director. Wendell still remembers some favorite things
such as hot apple strudel in a nightgown (powdered sugar, not to
mention Vienna's Sachertorte and Wiener Schnitzel!
Juanita (Hardy) and Joe Gillaspie '52 '53 were selected
by Epsilon Sigma Phi, National Honorary Extension Fraternity, to
receive their 2002 Kansas Friend of Extension Award. The award will
be presented at KSU on Oct. 23. Joe and Juanita have been active
in family community leadership programs and family community education
activities during the past 50 years.
Betty (McGowan) Bradley '51 was honored Sept. 27, 2002
as being named First Citizen by CornerBank in Winfield. Betty is
a volunteer in the community and for the college.

Nancy (De Mott) Solomon '68 has retired from the University
of Arizona after 20 years as director of publications and public
information at the center for creative photography. She is now the
owner of Nancy Solomon Studio, a publishing consultant and graphic
design business.
Ken Hathaway '67 has been appointed to serve as pastor of
the First United Methodist Church in Liberal. After three years
of mission work at McCurdy School in Espanola, Ken and his wife,
Jan (Heersche) '69, have returned to the pastoral ministry.

Bruce DeHaven '70 is coaching special teams for the San
Francisco 49ers. Most recently Bruce was elected president of the
National Football League Coaches Association for a two-year term.
Ted Hresko '73 has retired after over 28 years with the
Secret Service. He had accepted a position with the newly-created
U.S. Federal Air Marshal Service as the special agent in charge
of the Pittsburgh Field Office.
Melanie (Eslick) Buettgenbach '73 accompanied three high
school students from the Independent School in Wichita to Europe
in June. This was a trip that brought back memories for Melanie-while
at SC Melanie went with Judith Charlton to England for Jan Term
in 1973.
Mike Allen '74 received two honors this summer with his
inclusion of the in the Great Minds of the 21st Century, published
by the American Biographical Institute, and 2002 and 2000 Outstanding
Scientists of the 21st Century, published by the International Biographical
Center, Cambridge, England. Mike is the director of the Center for
Conservation Biology and professor of plant pathology and biology,
at the University of California-Riverside.
Rory and Donna (Sanders) Hansen '74 '74 report that after
4 ½ years of work, they have completed the building process of their
experimental aircraft, N775H, a Van's RV6. They built it in their
garage and now have it at Falcon Field in Mesa, Ariz. It's all aluminum,
fully aerobatic, good cross country at 205 m.p.h.
Eddie McGowan '76 and Lynn Smith were married in Eureka
Springs, Ark.
Mike Marion '77 has been appointed pastor of the McPherson
United Methodist Church. Mike gave the sermon at the Grace United
Methodist Church on Homecoming Sunday.

Melinda (McCall) Neal '81 has been hired as a natural science
department instructor at Cowley County Community College in Arkansas
City.
Donna (Hovey) Smith '84 recently spoke at an informational
session on prescriptions cards at the Winfield Area Chamber of Commerce.
Donna is a pharmacist at Graves Drug Store in Winfield.
Kent Blaine Bunting '85 received his Ph.D. from St. Louis
University in May of 2002 with a major in American Studies. Bunting's
dissertation was titled "The Koan of Seina En: History and Meaning
in the Japanese Garden at the Missouri Botanical Garden."
Gary Podschun '88 has accepted a job as a part-time research/evaluation
coordinator with the Collaborative Research unit at Cook County
Hospital in Chicago. It involves working on a community-based evaluation
of a multifaceted intervention to improve the health outcomes of
the homeless.
Gene L. "Rusty" Robertson '88 is a coach, assistant athletic
director, and physical education teacher for Temple Christian school
in Fort Worth, Texas. Rusty also serves as youth minister for Joplin
Baptist Church.

Rhonda (Rothe) Davis '90 is in her 10th year at Rainbows
United Inc., in Wichita, as a physical therapist.
Michele (Neel) Ridder '90 is a family nurse practitioner
working part-time at Northwest Family Physicians in Wichita. She
and husband, Matt, have a daughter, Sidney, 2 ½ years old, and a
son Michael, one year old.
Debbie McNinch '95 has been hired as an admissions representative
at Cowley County Community College in Arkansas City.
Jeremy Vickers '96 was appointed to the Epworth/Goodwill
Chapel United Methodist Churches for the Missouri West annual conference
in July 2002.
Mike Shaw '98 graduated from Arizona State College of Law
in May, and has passed the bar exam. He is with the law firm Vaughn
Ledbetter in Cottonwood, AZ.
Cicely (Carlson) '99 and Jonnie Karst were married July
27, 2002.

Tracy (Stapleton) '00 and Brandon Stidham were married
Aug. 10, 2002, in Oronogo, Mo. Tracy is working on her master of
nursing degree at the women's health nurse practitioner program
at the University of Missouri-Kansas City.
Natalia Mikhailova '00 is studying toward her master of
arts at Vanderbilt University in Tennessee, in the Department of
Comparative Literature. She is doing her research in the philosophy
of language and translation.
Nathan Eckert '01 and Shelley Good '02 were married on Aug.
3, 2002. Both are attending Southwestern Missouri State University
and studying toward their masters of science degrees in biology.
Nathan was awarded a research assistantship and Shelley received
a teaching assistantship.
Seth Leeper '01 has accepted a position with Excel Corporation
as a credit representative. Seth will work with the meat solutions
platform of Excel, where he will evaluate, establish, and monitor
credit limits for an accounts receivable portfolio of $80 million.
Kevin Warner '01 recently passed the National Athletic
Trainers' Association Board of Certification Examination and is
working as an assistant athletic trainer/clinical instructor in
the Southwestern College athletic training education program while
completing his master's degree in education.
Sherri Bradley '02 recently passed the National Athletic
Trainers' Association Board of Certification Examination and is
working as an assistant athletic trainer at the University of Arizona
while completing a master's degree.
Amy Govert-Larson '02 is the public relations/print promotions
associate for WNIT Public Television based in South Bend, Ind. WNIT
provides national and local programming to the communities of northern
Indiana and southwestern Michigan.
Missy McClening '02 and Jeremy Blanchard '03 were
married August 3, 2002.
Eric Carter '02 and Amanda Buckert were married June 15, 2002 at
the Grace Baptist Church in Wichita.
Chad Goodson '02 and Shanda Denny were married in Ponca
City, Okla., Aug. 3, 2002.

in Sterling Kan. Craig is employed in the education department at

Helen (Manser) Cain '29 died July 18, 2002,. Survivors
include her brother Julien '26 and a granddaughter Carrie
Cain '91.
Susie (Barnett) Johnston '28 died Oct. 18, 2002,. A memorial
service has been held in California.
Frances E. (Moncrief) Howard '32 died Aug. 11, 2002,. Frances
was a retired educator, and was 93 when he died.
Zeanna L. Toews '32 died Sept. 11, 2002, at Friendship Manor
in Pratt, Kan.
Owena (Newsom) Weide '32 died June 13, 2002. At the time
of her death she was residing in Arizona.
Darrel Berry '36 died Oct. 1, 2002, at his home in Garnett,
Kan. Before his retirement Berry was the general manager of Garnett
Savings & Loan. Survivors include his wife Julia, and sister Vera
Huff '41.
Louis Riebe '40 died July 30, 2002. At the time of his death
Louis had been living in Ponca City, Okla. Survivors include his
wife, Mildred.
Meryl (Parsons) Davis '41 died Oct. 19, at Lakepoint Nursing
Home in El Dorado, Kan. A retired educator, Meryl taught school
in Butler and Cowley counties.
Mary Elizabeth (Beeman) Storti '41 died Sept. 15, 2002.
A retired educator she is survived by her husband Jo, and a sister
Maxine (Beeman) Snyder '41.
Maxine (Hoar) Kistler '42 died in Sept. 2002.
Katherine (Isley) McGuire '43 died Sept. 28, 2002, in Denton
Texas. She is survived by her husband, David '47, sons David
Jr. '72 and Tim '81 and a daughter Susan Cooksey '75.
Leila (Williams) Johnson '45 died Sept. 21, 2002. A former
educator, she is survived by her husband Hiram.
Howard Stuber '50 died Aug. 22, 2002. Howard taught fifth
and sixth grades for USD 465 before retiring in 1986. He was then
employed by the City of Winfield in the electrical department until
1991, and had been assistant coordinator of Cowley County Civil
Defense since 1993.
Emmett P. Child '53 died Aug. 12, 2002. A retired optometrist
and Kingman County Director of Emergency Preparedness, Emmett had
been living in Kingman, Kan., at the time of his death.
Berta J. Paton '54 died at the Colwich Health Center Sept.
8, 2002. She was an elementary teacher in rural Winfield Schools
and then taught in the Wichita school system until retirement. Survivors
include a daughter Mary Margaret (Paton) Callahan '55.
Frances (Langley) Mardis '55 died Sept. 18, 2002, at a Topeka
retirement home. Frances was a social worker for Social and Rehabilitation
Services for the state of Kansas for 35 years before retiring in
1984.
John L Antal '58 died June 3, 2002, at the Hospice House
Woodside in Pinellas Park, Fla. John was a research and development
packaging engineer and biomedical engineer, and had his own company,
Kelly Frontal Inc., for 12 years in Florida. He is survived by his
wife, Frances (Hassay) '58.
Jerrold "Jerry" Calvin '59 died Aug. 26, 2002. Jerry was
general manager and managing partner of Dawson Monument. Survivors
include his wife, Lola, and a son Tom '83.
Mary Lou (Hughes) Holman '60 died July 17, 2001. She is
survived by her husband Clyde.
Richard Lee Sprout '60 died Sept. 4, 2002. A farmer and
Sumner County Road and Bridge heavy equipment operator he is survived
by his wife, LaDora.
Rebecca (Hayes) Welsh '63 died Sept. 9, 2002, at her home
in Hutchinson, Kan. An elementary school teacher,she had been a
first -grade teacher , fourth-, fifth-, and sixth-grade gifted teacher
and managed the literature program in Anaheim, Calif. Survivors
include her husband, Charles.
Earlyne (Walker) Atherton '77 passed away in November 2001.
She is survived by her husband Donald '60.
Rev. E. Kim Engleking '78 died Sept. 30, 2002, at his home
in Lees Summit, Mo.. Kim served United Methodist churches in both
the Kansas East and Kansas West Conferences, and the Iowa Annual
Conference earlier in his ministry. He is survived by his wife,
Peggy.
Tommie (Cochran) Reynolds '89 died Aug. 30, 2002. Tommie
was employed at Winfield State Hospital and Training Center for
20 years until it closed. At the time of her death, she was employed
as a social worker in Adult Protective Services at the Winfield
SRS office. Survivors include her husband, Paul.
Margaret (Maggie) Lavine '00 died Sept. 13, 2002.

Commons Assisted Living in Overland Park, Kan. Survivors include

Dorothy Boldt, 88, died Aug. 12, 2002 in Ulysses, Kan. Survivors
include her husband, Earl '36.
Deorge Goebel, 84, died Sept. 14, 2002. He is survived by
his wife, Maudene (Messmer) '39.
Noemie Charlotte Julienne (Mesureur) Baily died Sept. 23,
2002. She is survived by her husband James W. '69, and sister-in-law
Shirley (Bailey) Coad '53.
Thad G. McLaughlin died Sept. 25, 2002 at the Exempla Lutheran
Hospice, Wheat Ridge, Colo. A memorial in McLaughlin's name has
been established at Southwestern College.
Blanche Campbell, longtime Winfield resident, died Sept.
30, 2002. She is survived by her daughter Susan (Campbell) Brooks
'77.
Rev. Charles Mattix Jr. died Oct. 3, 1001 in Meade, Kan.

Achievement
Marsha Granberry, assistant professor of education and
coordinator of secondary education program, presented a session
Oct. 12 for the Kansas Association for the Education of Young Children
on the value of nursery rhymes in preparing young students for reading,
writing and spelling activities. "There's Always Time for a Nursery
Rhyme" was a filled-to-capacity session and extra seating had to
be provided for participants. On Oct. 26, Granberry was the workshop
clinician for the Kansas Music Educators South Central District
Convention held in Lyons. The emphasis for the presentation, "Listen,
What Do you Hear?" was developing discriminating listening skills
for students in the music classroom and dealt with melody, rhythm
and tone quality.
Shawn Neises, assisatant professor of education and director
of early childhood education; Abriel Lette, director of Little
Builders Preschool; and SC students Kylee Ward, Amanda
Milch, and Lynne Gubichuk will be presenting at the National
Association of Early Childhood Teacher Educators (NAECTE) conference
in New York City Nov. 20. The title of the presentation is "Constructivist
Teacher Education: Our Project Work 'Eggs'perience." The group will
also be attending the National Association for the Education of
Young Children (NAEYC) annual conference Nov. 20-23 in New York
City.
Steve Rankin, associate professor of religious studies and
campus minister, preached and taught in Malaysia at Trinity Methodist
Church, Kuala Lumpur, from Nov. 10 to 12. In addition to preaching
in Wesleyan themes, Rankin met with a group of lay people and pastors
for a more strict teaching time. He also attended the American Academy
of Religion meeting in Toronto, Canada, Nov.23-25.
Moira Rogers, associate professor of international studies
and modern languages, will present an invited paper, "Mondäne Spielerei
oder ernsthafte Naturforschung? Zur Leipziger Wissenschaftskultur,
1740-1750," ("Trivial Entertainment or Serious Scientific Research?
The Public Culture of Science in Leipzig, 1740-1750"), at the International
Colloquium on Modern History, Technische Universität Branuschweig,
on Dec. 18, 2002. Rogers also was facilitator for a diversity conference
at Cowley College Community College Nov. 6, 2002.
James Schuppener, professor of music and director of choirs,
will sing the title role of Mendelssohn's Elijah with the Choral
Union of Janesville, Wisc., in December 2002. He has been a soloist
with this group in previous performances of Messiah and the St.
Matthew's Passion. He also is a staff member and soloist with Camerata
Appalachia, a choir based in West Virginia that is composed of outstanding
college students, members of the Larry Parson's Chorale, and professional
soloists. This choir tours exclusively in Europe. He has helped
plan and implement concert tours to Scotland, Ireland, Wales, Austria,
and Italy. Camerata Appalachia is presently preparing a tour to
Austria, Hungary, and the Czech Republic scheduled for June 2003.
Beth Sheppard, reference/automation librarian, is author
of a review of Martin Asiedu-Peprah's Johannine Sabbath Conflicts
as Juridical Controversy that was recently published by the Review
of Biblical Literature (September 02 edition). Sheppard was invited
to write this review because of her dissertation's focus on legal
motifs in the Fourth Gospel. Review of Bible Literature is produced
