Southwestern College Commencement
May 6, 2001

"(Former Academic) Dean Hamby Barton always said the mark of an educated person is not knowing information but being able to ask the right questions. Behind the dean's comment is the understanding that an educated person can stand just a little outside the culture. You will be called a Moundbuilder from this point on. You may choose to deflect with some embarrassment about a relatively unknown mascot and a tradition of rock throwing which is not quickly described. Yet I hope it is part of who you are. Being a builder can be a very honorable and rewarding lifelong journey which you should be prepared for as a graduate of this institution. Remember-together Moundbuilders are expected to eventually build mountains."
