In Memory of Jacobi Scott & Shelvin Keller

Dear members of the Builder family,

With profound sadness, I share that students Jacobi Scott and Shelvin Keller were killed in a tragic car accident near Marshall, Texas last night. They were traveling home for summer break.

Shelvin KellerA native of La Place, Louisiana, Shelvin Keller was a first-year student. He had not yet declared a major. Shelvin was a running back on our Builder football team, a wonderful presence, and was looking forward to the fall season.

Jacobi ScottJacobi Scott, from Denham Spring, Louisiana, transferred to Southwestern last fall from Grambling University. He was a quarterback and had assumed a leadership position on the team this spring. He was majoring in computer science and digital arts.

Jacobi and Shelvin had many friends at Southwestern and have been described by fellow Builders as “two of the nicest guys on campus.”Cobi-Shel Football Action

We are working today to support Shelvin and Jacobi’s friends, teammates, and family members at Southwestern and beyond. Our hearts and our prayers go out to Shelvin and Jacobi’s families during this difficult time.

This news is distressing – our community is tightly knit, we all share in the tragic loss of these two bright, strong, young men – two Builders.  It seems impossible to make sense of tragedies as devastating as this. In these moments of grief, it is important that we offer each other support and comfort.

The following resources are available to all members of the SC community:

Throughout the day – Campus Life Office
Any member of the SC community who is currently on campus and wishes to gather for in-person support and conversation is encouraged to visit the campus life office in the lower level of the Student Center.

Staff will be available including, SC student life staff, our campus grief counselor, our campus minister, counselors from Four-County Mental Health, staff from Wichita Family Crisis Center.

Noon – Deets Library
There will be a remembrance gathering at noon today in the reference room of Deets Library.

Today and tomorrow – Residence Halls
We want everyone to be safe. For those of you who are planning to travel home today, if you need to stay an extra night in the residence halls, please just let us know. You can contact Sarah Hallinan in Residence Life to make arrangements.

Today and beyond
Please remember that even as you leave for summer break, there are many resources to support you, whether you are on campus or not. Those resources include Dan Falk and the student life staff, Rev. Ben Hanne, and many others – please feel free to reach out either in person, by email, or by phone. We are here for you.

Please join me in praying for Jacobi and Shelvin's families - for all of their friends so deeply affected by this loss and for our Builder family.

May we share love and comfort one another,
May we find peace.

Sincerely,
Brad Andrews
President
