Four high school seniors who have committed to attend Southwestern College in the fall of 2018 have been awarded full-tuition scholarships.  They are Shelley Morin and Jenni Warren, Winfield; Jonah Robson, Rose Hill; and Maria Collins, Wichita.

“We hosted 108 excellent students and their families on campus for our full-tuition scholarship competitions in February,” said President Brad Andrews. “We are excited for the four students who were selected as recipients. We know as they are strengthened during their time at Southwestern, our college will be strengthened by their being a part of our community. We are also pleased to share that many of the finalists who competed for the full-tuition scholarships have chosen to become Moundbuilders – our campus community is eager to welcome the Class of 2022 to Winfield next fall.”

The Pillars Scholarship, a merit-based award that recognizes two students who show outstanding academic abilities, will provide full-tuition support to Morin and Collins. The Moundbuilder Spirit Scholarship recognizes two student leaders who are well-rounded, hardworking, and community-minded.

The Moundbuilder Spirit Scholarship will provide full-tuition support to Warren and Robson. Each of the scholarships is renewable for four years and valued at approximately $150,000. 

Morin is the daughter of Travis and Kris Morin and attends Winfield High School.  She plans to major in pre-engineering and participate in the Southwestern College Leadership Team.

Collins is the daughter of Wade and Tina Collins and attends Kapaun Mt. Carmel High School.  She plans to major in biology with career plans to attend medical school and become a pediatrician. She will also participate on the Southwestern College Leadership Team.

Warren is the daughter of Susan Garrelts and attends Winfield High School.  She plans to major in musicaltheatre and participate in both vocal music and theatre.

Robson is the son of Scott and Ginger Robson and attends Rose Hill High School.  He plans to major inmarine biology and be a part of the Southwestern College Leadership Team.

The response to both scholarship competitions exceeded expectations, according to Stephannie DeLong, director of admission at Southwestern College.  On Feb. 3 and Feb. 10, students and their families traveled from all parts of Kansas, Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Minnesota, Nebraska, Colorado, and Florida to compete. Each student completed a timed essay and interview with faculty and staff for the competition.

“The Pillars Scholarship and Moundbuilder Spirit Scholarship attract students who demonstrate strength of character and academic curiosity,” said Andrews. “These are the students who find Southwestern College to be a perfect fit; they find a community here that will help them more fully discover their potential and purpose and that will prepare them to be service-minded leaders.”
