Southwestern College Named a College of Distinction
By demonstrating continued dedication to high-impact educational practices, Southwestern College has been named as one of the nation’s Colleges of Distinction.
Colleges of Distinction recognizes institutions of higher education that create unique learning environments where students not only earn college credit and valuable life experience, but also participate in character-building community-based learning programs, service learning programs, diversity and global learning programs, intensive writing courses, collaborative assignments and projects, undergraduate research, study abroad programs, and internships.
“We are truly honored to name Southwestern College as a College of Distinction for its continued commitment to student success,” said Tyson Schritter, chief operating officer for Colleges of Distinction.
“Colleges of Distinction applauds Southwestern College for providing an up-to-date curriculum, enriching the college experience with high-impact educational practices, and fostering a commitment to provide its students with an education that stretches far beyond what’s typically required from an academic major.”
The selection process at Colleges of Distinction requires that institutions adhere to four distinctions: engaged students, great teaching, vibrant community, and successful outcomes. This process also includes an interview with institutional leadership and review of each institution’s freshman experience as well as its general education program, strategic plan, alumni success, satisfaction measures.
“While we’re certainly proud to be recognized for the high-impact work happening across campus in classrooms, on practice fields, and during service learning activities, what really matters and what really is distinctive about Southwestern is the change that this pedagogical approach effects in the lives of our students and their families,” said Southwestern College President Brad Andrews. “We’re proud to help students recognize their potential and define their purpose— preparing capable and adaptable graduates who are driven to serve their communities and make a difference in the world is our greatest tradition.”
Colleges of Distinction doesn’t assign a ranking, instead they elevate institutions that meet the criteria for selection by featuring profiles on their website and in the organization’s guidebook.
“Colleges of Distinction is much more than an annual ranking of colleges and universities. Our goal is to select schools that are 100% focused on the student experience, driven to produce well-rounded graduates who are prepared for a global society and economy,” said Schritter.
Since 2000, the Colleges of Distinction website and guidebook have recognized and honored schools throughout the U.S. for excellence in undergraduate-focused higher education. The member schools in the Colleges of Distinction consortium distinguish themselves through their focus on the undergraduate experience. The website and annual guidebooks provide college profiles, tools, and resources for students, parents, and high school counselors. For more information visit CollegesofDistinction.com.
