JourneyKids Spring Concert
The JourneyKids Choir will present its spring concert on Saturday, May 14, at 7:30 p.m. in Richardson Performing Arts Center on the Southwestern College campus. Admission to the concert is $10 for adults, but is free for students, children, and Southwestern College faculty and staff. Proceeds from the concert support the ensemble’s continued growth and scholarship program. For tickets or more information, call Dylan Moore, director of the Community Music School, at (620) 229-6188 or email cms@sckans.edu.
The concert will feature a variety of musical styles designed to take the audience on a memorable journey through different cultures.
The choir is directed by Nikki Kirk and is accompanied by Sara Weinert. Kirk is a music educator at Jefferson Elementary and C-4 Elementary in Arkansas City. Kirk also serves as the director of music at the First Presbyterian Church of Winfield and is in her ninth year of teaching.
“I am very proud of our JourneyKids Choir and all that they have accomplished this year,” Kirk says. “Our students have connected with other children and adults in their surrounding community through music, and this experience will stay with them for a lifetime. It is my sincere hope that all students involved in the ensembles take what they have learned and share the power of their musical experience with others by becoming music leaders in their schools, as well as in the JourneyKids Choir. We are excited to show the community how much our students have grown in music throughout the year during our final concert on Saturday, May 14.”
The Community Music School’s JourneyKids Choir is a 20-member group made up of students in grades 1-7 from Winfield, Arkansas City, Parkerfield, Oxford, Udall, and Burden. The group allows students in the region the ability to sing out a specific repertoire from the elementary choral genre. A focal point of the group is the creation and development of community, providing an open and encouraging atmosphere for musical exploration and learning. The JourneyKids Choir has recently performed at First Presbyterian Church in Winfield and First United Methodist Church in Arkansas City.
