Directing I Students Get Chance to Direct

Four Southwestern College students and one guest will make their directing debuts on Wednesday, Sept. 30 as they direct a scene from a play as part of the directing I class at SC.  The scenes will begin at 6:30 p.m. on the patio next to the Roy L. Smith student center and continue around the campus.  There is no admission charge to attend.

“This is a chance for our students to build on their own sense of theatre,” says Roger Moon, director of theatre at Southwestern College.

The directors will depict four scenes about college life, each of which will last about 10 minutes.  The directors are Jamie Garrard, Belton, Mo.; Cody Davis, Montrose, Colo.; Caitlynn French, Derby; Kevin Mnich, Bartlesville, Okla.; and guest director Allen Twitchell, Coffeyville.

Garrard has acted in numerous SC productions but this is her first attempt at directing.

“This is a different kind of pressure,” Garrard says.  “It’s like a teacher or parent mentality.  It is a bit foreign to me but exciting.  In our last audition, I finally felt comfortable enough with the cast to know when to push them and it is neat watching as they grow and gain confidence in me.”

“The students have been studying Harold Clurman, the father of American directing,” Moon says.  “They are figuring out his process and now they are recognizing their own theatrical sense.”

In case of rain, the scenes will be in Richardson Auditorium in Christy Administration Building.  For more information call (620) 229-6272.
