SC Band Concert Sunday; Artist Mark Flickinger to Paint Original Work
The Southwestern College Concert Band presents “Shall We Dance?” on Sunday, Nov. 21, at 3 p.m. in Richardson Auditorium on the Southwestern College campus.
The concert will feature “English Dances” by Malcolm Arnold, “Satiric Dances” by Norman Dello Joio, Symphonic Dance No. 3 "Fiesta" by Clifton Williams, and “Contra-Dance No. 1” by Ludwig van Beethoven.
"While the most recognized composer on the concert is Beethoven, concert goers might recognize Malcolm Arnold as the composer of the music from the film “The Bridge on the River Kwai” which features that great march with a whistled melody," says conductor Jimmy Leach.
During the concert, Mark Flickinger, visual artist, will paint an original work in response to the music, which he’ll donate to be auctioned off following the concert.
"Having a painter on stage responding to our music will be a very interesting experience and a first for all of us, I'm sure," adds Leach.
Flickinger has shown his work in many galleries across the country, including Axis in Philadelphia, Browns in Boise, Idaho, and Jay-Addington in Chicago, as well as having solo exhibitions at Exhibit A Gallery, Savannah Ga., and has been represented by Ruschman Gallery in Indianapolis for the past 15 years. He also has shows currently at American Legacy in Kansas City and locally over the years at Clayton Staples, Trish Higgins, and Fiber Arts. His paintings are included in many private public collections across America and abroad. Flickinger’s oil painting titled “Cedars and Snow” was recently purchased by the office of Governor of Kansas. Along with the painting being displayed in the governor’s mansion, the painting will be used as the Christmas card, which the governor’s office will send out to more than 28,000 homes worldwide.
Tickets may be purchased in advance or at the door and are $5. For more information on this or any of the band’s 2010-2011 performances, contact Lou Tharp at (620) 229-6272 or visit the website at www.sckans.edu/sks-band.
