The Center for Music Composition (CMC) at Southwestern College will present its inaugural recital of student works Friday, Nov. 12, at 7:30 p.m. in Messenger Recital Hall inside the Darbeth Fine Arts Center.
           
The performance will include new compositions by Stephen Butler, Ismail Farid, Joanna Woon, Lauren Schmitz, David Holland, and Tim Miller.

           
Christopher Schmitz, director of the CMC, is an assistant professor of music at Southwestern College. He returned to SC this year after a two-year residency at the University of Texas at Austin to complete his coursework toward a doctorate in music composition.
           
“I am very excited to showcase the wonderful work our students have been doing this semester,” Schmitz says.  “I want to encourage our SC students as well as local community members to come over to Messenger Hall and support these talented composers. The recital will last less than an hour and will encompass a wide variety of musical styles.”
           
The CMC provides a program musicians ranging from student composers to those interested in developing their craft and programming new works. Instruction is offered in both acoustic and electronic composition and the center includes a new electronic music facility complete with the latest versions of sound and design and digital audio workstation software.
           
Admission to the recital is free.
            
“Student composers in the CMC currently include graduate and undergraduate students in the SC music department, as well as pre-college members enrolled through the SC Community Music School,” Schmitz says.
