Shook Chosen as Director Elect for MTNA

Tim Shook, chair of the division of performing arts at Southwestern College, has been elected as a director-elect for two years and then director for another two years for the Music Teachers National Association (MTNA).  He will represent the west-central division of the national group from 2010 to 2012.

“Being west-central division director-elect allows me to look forward to 2012-2014 as a member of the MTNA board of directors,” Shook says.  “Working with people to promote the value of music in everyone’s lives is extremely satisfying.  I was honored to be nominated to this position and am honored to serve in this capacity.”
           
Along with being the division chair, Shook is also professor of music at Southwestern College where he has taught since 1988.  Shook teaches applied piano, piano class, music history, and creativity.  In addition he operates a large independent piano studio in Wichita combining group and private instruction. He holds degrees from Kansas State University, Wichita State University, and a Ph.D. from the University of Oklahoma.
           
Shook has presented workshops for teachers throughout the Midwestern United States, New York, Malaysia, and Singapore. He has written several articles for “Keys Magazine,” “Keyboard Companion,” and “Kansas Music Review.”
           
Shook is the composition competition chair for the Kansas Music Teachers Association (KMTA), composition competition chair for west central division of MTNA, and is an active member of three local chapters, Wichita Metropolitan Music Teachers Association, Walnut Valley Music Teachers Association, and Wichita Area Piano Teachers League.  He has presented papers and served on panels to the National Conference on Piano Pedagogy.  He has served as a discussion leader for the National Group Piano and Pedagogy Forum.
