Deborah Martin's Senior Recital
Malaysian-born pianist, Deborah Martin is in her final semester of study at Southwestern College, finishing her Bachelors of Arts in Music and minor in Business Administration. She studies piano with Dr. Timothy Shook, Division of Performing Arts Chair and Piano Professor at Southwestern College, and studies voice as a secondary with Dr. Brian Winnie, Director of Choral Activities and Voice at Southwestern College.
In 2013 and 2014, she participated in the piano solo Honors Auditions hosted by the Kansas Music Teachers' Association (KMTA) and returned with outstanding achievements consecutively. Martin was first place in the Junior/Senior categories of the 2014 auditions and third place in the Freshman/Sophomore 2013 auditions. Her achievement in 2014 was recognized with the invitation to perform at the Honors Recital in the 2015 Kansas Music Educators' Association annual workshop. In 2015, Martin also won first place in the senior division of the South Kansas Symphony Concerto Competition.
She is an active member of the A Cappella Choir, SC Singers, the Southwestern College Choral Union, and the South Kansas Symphony (SKS) at Southwestern College. She also has experience serving as a collaborative pianist, accompanying both vocal and instrumental students for private lessons, choirs in the vicinity, and the SKS. She has played the keyboard in the pit orchestra for several of the college's musical theater productions including: Sweeny Todd, The Little Mermaid, Nextto Normal and Spamalot. Most recently, she also served as the Assistant Musical Director in the college's production of Legally Blonde, the Musical.
Martin is also a private piano studio instructor in the Community Music School at Southwestern College. She is a section leader and assistant student conductor with the A Cappella Choir and Southwestern College Choral Union. In the summer of 2015, she was accepted to the conducting institute hosted by Westminster Choir College in Princeton, New Jersey. She had the opportunity to study with distinguished pedagogues in choral conducting, mainly Simon Carrington, during her time there. She is also an active member of the Music Teachers' National Association and the American Choral Directors Association.
Martin also serves as a worship leader. Her experience in worship leading comes from being a part of Worship Outreach (WO) at Southwestern College. In 2013, she was the keyboardist for WO's Southeast Asia tour entitled "No Secrets." She aslo served as the Assistant Producer and one of the songwriters in the production of the "No Secrets" album.
