Community Music School at Southwestern College Offering Choir for Students in Grades 2-5
The Community Music School at Southwestern College is offering a new choral opportunity for students in Grades 2-5 called JourneyKids Choir.
The choir is for students interested in growing relationships and to enhance their love for music, according to Dylan Moore, director of the Community Music School.
“The group will allow students the ability to sing an eclectic selection of songs that are geared to build musical knowledge in a fun and inviting setting,” Moore says. “A focal point of the group will be the development of community, providing an open and encouraging atmosphere for student bonding and camaraderie.”
Nikki Kirk, a pre-kindergarten-5th grade general music teacher for Arkansas City schools, will be directing the group. Kirk serves as the director of music for First Presbyterian Church in Winfield and is in her ninth year of teaching.
“She is extremely excited to work with the Community Music School at Southwestern College, having been a previous guest clinician for Spring Into the Arts Day 2015 and Music Educators’ Day of Workshops 2015,” Moore says.
The group will rehearse on Thursdays from 5:30-6:30 p.m., in Darbeth Rehearsal Hall on the Southwestern College campus. All experience levels are welcome, but an audition for voice placement, musical ability, and level of knowledge will be expected. Auditions can be arranged by contacting the CMS Director. For the audition, students are asked to sing “Happy Birthday.” For more information, or to schedule an audition time, call Moore at (620) 229-6188 or email cms@sckans.edu.
