The South Kansas Symphony, A Cappella Choir, and the SC Singers will present the “Candlelight Christmas Concert” on Sunday, Dec. 2, at 3 p.m., in the Richardson Performing Arts Center in the Christy Administration Building on the campus of Southwestern College.  There is no admission charge to attend.

Daniel Stevens will conduct the symphony while David Gardner will lead the A Cappella Choir and the SC Singers.  Each group will have its own time on stage, joining forces to close out the concert.  James Leland will accompany on the organ for a Christmas carol sing-a-long.
           
“A lot of the music will be familiar Christmas carols with fresh new arrangements,” Gardner says.  “We also will perform some heart-warming new pieces of music, too.”
 
“The orchestra will feature a balance of traditional favorite Christmas songs along with a couple of unique works,” Stevens says.  “One is a traditional Russian Christmas tune that develops into a majestic piece.  We will also be playing the movement ‘On the Trail’ from Grofé’s ‘Grand Canyon Suite’ which was featured in the 1983 film ‘A Christmas Story.’”

When the orchestra, A Cappella Choir, and SC Singers collaborate, they will perform excerpts from Handel’s “Messiah.”

Devices to assist those with hearing problems are available in the box office, and an area is reserved for handicapped patrons and their companions in the rear of the hall. 

Following the concert, the Southwestern College theatre department will perform “Eagerheart” at 6:30 p.m., in the Helen Graham Little Theatre on the lower level of Christy Administration Building.  There is no admission charge but tickets need to be reserved prior to the show.
 
The SC Singers will have another concert on Thursday, Dec. 6, featuring excerpts from J. S. Bach’s “Magnificat” and “Cantata #10,” as well as familiar holiday favorites.
