Intermediate

Oral Communication

These courses will improve students' ability to comprehend and respond to intermediate-level spoken English and to improve students' ability to use spoken English in academic and social situations.  At the intermediate level, students are expected to interact at normal conversational speed with more varied speakers. Students will develop more nuanced listening skills such as understanding tone of voice; making inferences; taking notes of academic lectures.   Students will explore more abstract topics and less-routine situations.


Intermediate Language Structure & Vocabulary

These Intermediate Language Structure and Vocabulary courses will provide students with the building blocks of language: vocabulary and grammar.  Students will be exposed to new vocabulary by viewing and thoroughly exploring a theme. Students will view and examine grammatical structures, and practice their correct forms in isolated workbook activities. Student will participate in various communicative activities to acquire working knowledge of the words and grammatical structures.  At the Intermediate level, students begin to develop specialized vocabulary that includes less frequent, academic words.  Students develop a deeper, more complex understanding of language structure that allows them to construct longer phrases and express more nuanced thoughts.  Topics covered include parts of speech, verb tenses, modals, count and non-count nouns, coordinating conjunctions, and quantity and degree words, relative clauses.


Intermediate Reading

The Intermediate Reading courses provide vocabulary and reading skills for high intermediate students. The texts provide interesting articles and textbook passages.   Students at the Intermediate Reading level will read multiple paragraph essays with complex sentences and subject specific vocabulary. Topics may become more complex and investigate multiple perspectives. Comprehension of tone, point of view, and types of evidence begin to develop at the intermediate level.  Reading speed may still be limited by vocabulary and increased complexity of texts. 


Intermediate Writing

In Intermediate Writing, students move from paragraph writing to short essays of different genres. They learn how to present information into a well-organized format.  Students learn to create sound thesis statements, transitions, and conclusions.  Intermediate Writing students continue to practice the writing process- from prewriting, preparing first drafts, revising, editing, and finally, publishing their work. Throughout the course, students refine the use of grammatical knowledge, enhanced vocabulary, mechanics, and spelling. Students will expand the length and complexity of their sentence structure.
