Two Prestigious Competitive Scholarships

Four Full Tuition Awards

Southwestern College has a long history of recognizing the special talents of each student. Indeed, helping students understand their potential and strengths– and in doing so preparing Moundbuilders to be service minded citizens of the world– is a great tradition at Southwestern College.

SC believes in the merit of each student and potential of every person.

Merit and potential are exhibited in many forms. At SC we value strength of character and academic purpose, and this focus has led Southwestern College to offer four full-tuition awards. The Pillars Academic Scholarship and the Moundbuilder Spirit Scholarship are competitive awards. We suggest each qualified student consider applying for one of these scholarships. Southwestern College works throughout the admission process to help meet the financial assistance needs of our students and their families. In recognition of this commitment SC is able to consider each student for either the Pillars Academic or Moundbuilder Spirit Scholarship, not both. The full description of each scholarship and qualifications can be found on the following page. If you are unsure which scholarship is a better fit for you please contact the Office of Admission at 800-846-1543.

To be considered, qualified students must be admitted to Southwestern College and have submitted a scholarship application on or before January 20, 2017.

Finalists will receive invitations to visit campus in February to complete an essay and interview with faculty/staff members.

* The amounts listed in the freshman grid are based on living on campus. Should a student decide to live off campus, the scholarship will be reduced by 40%. {1} Need-based funds will be added to the student’s base amount where appropriate. {2} Best composite ACT is used. Last test date to improve test score for financial aid is June. {3} Students may receive one activity scholarship in addition to their academic scholarship. {4} Should a student receive a scholarship from their church community, the amount of the scholarship will be matched by Southwestern up to $500 per semester ($1,000 per year). To receive the match, church funds must be received by September 1 of the fall semester (application required). {5} Southwestern scholarships are renewable provided the student maintains a 2.0 cumulative GPA. {6} Once financial aid award is set for the year, it is guaranteed for each year thereafter, provided the student meets financial aid deadlines, the renewal GPA, and continues living on campus.

Academic Scholarships

Academic Scholarships are awarded on the basis of a student’s academic record and ACT or SAT scores. Amounts vary and are available to incoming Southwestern students attending main campus courses. Southwestern scholarships are renewable for up to 10 semesters provided the student maintains a 2.0 cumulative grade point average. Students may receive only one academic scholarship.

Activity Scholarships

These scholarships are available to students participating in designated Southwestern College activity programs. The scholarships vary in amount and often require an audition, interview or tryout with the college’s activity director or coach. Students may receive only one activity scholarship. The scholarships are renewable provided the student continues to participate in the activity and maintains a cumulative grade point average of 2.0.

Grants

Southwestern Need-Based Scholarship

This will provide assistance to students who have high need and may not qualify for the Federal SEOG Grant. Because of restricted funds, Southwestern College limits the grant to students demonstrating financial need whose financial aid (grants, scholarships and loans) will not meet the basic costs (tuition, room & board, and books) of attending Southwestern.

Trustee Grants

When an employee has worked full time at Southwestern for at least two years, trustee grants to cover a substantial part of tuition are available for that employee’s spouse and unmarried dependent children if they enroll as undergraduate students at the college. For further information, employees should consult Volume 3, Section 3.8.3.1 of the Southwestern College Policy Manual.

Management Grants

Students selected as SC Ambassadors, elected to positions in SGA or SAA, or who achieve leadership positions on the staff of the Collegian student newspaper or the Moundbuilder yearbook receive grants recognizing these responsibilities.

Alan Bradford Veteran Award

This grant is available to any active military personnel or veteran who enrolls at Southwestern College’s main campus in Winfield. The grant is in recognition of our veterans’ service to our country. The award is named for Alan Bradford, the first Moundbuilder killed in action in Vietnam. He is the first name listed on the veterans’ rock at Southwestern College.

The scholarship is an automatic $5,000 upon enrollment in a main campus program. It is renewable for up to four years for a total of $20,000 and can be combined with academic scholarships, veteran benefits, and federal and state financial aid. Veterans of all military branches are eligible. Service can have been completed anywhere in the world.

For more information on the scholarship and to determine eligibility, email Michelle Pentz at Michelle.Pentz@sckans.edu.

For answers to your veteran benefit questions, contact Aimee Campbell at 620-229-6233 or email her at Aimee.Campbell@sckans.edu.
